Repeats made, records broken at county track championship

Redan captured its sixth consecutive DeKalb County Track Championship boys’ title and Southwest DeKalb made it three in a row in girls’ competition in track action at Panthersville Stadium on April 1.

Redan senior Steve Emere won the 110-meter hurdles (14.12) and set a record in the triple jump (48-03) to lead the Raiders to their sixth consecutive DeKalb County championship. Emere’s record-setting jump broke the record of 47-8.5 set by Richard Williams in 1986.
Senior Justin Sims gave Redan a sweep in the hurdle events as he won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 38.17 to help lead Redan to its 88-77 victory over Stephenson. Miller Grove finished third with 72 points as the Wolverines picked up four gold medals in the meet.

The Miller Grove 4x100-meter relay team broke the meet record twice this week on the way to a gold. The team of Jonathan Norris, Antoine Hightower, Stephen Hill and Kenneth Gilstrap ran a 40.92 in the preliminaries and then a 40.90 in the event finals to break the record of 41.06 set by Southwest DeKalb in 1996. The 1996 record- setting Southwest team included two future Olympic gold medalists in Angelo Taylor and Terrance Trammell.

Miller Grove’s Gilstrap, a Middle Tennessee football/track signee, swept the 100-meter (10.45) and 200-meter dashes (21.34) to take home a pair of gold medals. His preliminary time of 20.98 tied the record set by Southwest DeKalb’s Clint Crenshaw in 1998.

Hill, who ran the third leg of Miller Grove’s 4x100 relay team, also collected a meet record of his own with a leap 24-08.25 in the long jump to break his 2008 record of 23-11.

Nabil Hamid of Druid Hills and Jerry King of Dunwoody both doubled up on gold medals during the meet. Hamid swept the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs while King captured first in the shot put and discus.

Southwest DeKalb picked up one victory in the girls’ competition as senior Amber Crews won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:26.28 to lead a balanced Lady Panther squad to its third consecutive county championship with a 108-85.5 win over Redan.

Redan swept the 4x100-meter (47.42) and 4x400-meter (3:53.63) relays and Kennisha Holden won the 300-meter hurdles (44.20) in taking second place in the overall standings.
Brittany Porter from Towers swept the long jump (21-03.5) and triple jump (39-00) to be in a group of three girls’ competitors to win a pair of gold medals. Porter’s leap of 21-03.5 set a meet record by besting the 20-01 set by Southwest DeKalb’s Terri Robinson in 1997.

Columbia senior Takeia Pinckney swept the 100-mter (11.71) and the 200-meter (24.23) dashes to join the two-time winner club along with freshman Meghan Wetterhalls of Lakeside who won the 1,600-meter (5:17.05) and 3,200-meter (11:56.40) runs.
