Mayo

In the District 91 race to replace state Rep. Stan Watson, who ran for CEO, Rahn Mayo defeated Rita Robinzine 55 percent to 45 percent in the runoff.

Mayo, 33, is a real estate agent, graduate of Howard University and vice president of the Brook Glen Neighborhood Association.

A former advertising sales representative and gospel and talk radio co-host, Mayo was born in Los Angeles, where he was raised by his father, Whitman Mayo, an actor best known for his role as Grady on the 1970s TV show Sanford and Son.

The district covers parts of south DeKalb and north Henry counties.

District 93, a complex election comes to an end

Dawkins-Haigler

Sometimes it seemed like the duel between Dee Dawkins-Haigler, 38, and Malik Douglas, 37, both from Lithonia, to fill the vacant seat abdicated by former lawmaker Ron Sailor would never end.

After a May 13 special election, June 10 runoff, July 15 primary and Aug. 5 runoff, voters elected consultant Dawkins-Haigler over Douglas 61 percent to 39 percent.

Because Sailor pled guilty to federal money laundering charges in March, a special election was held to fill the seat for the remainder of 2008 in May. Dawkins-Haigler won that honor in a runoff with Douglas June 10.

Dawkins-Haigler then had to turn around and win the July 15 primary to hold office until 2010. That also went to an Aug. 5 runoff with Dawkins-Haigler the winner.

The district covers parts of south DeKalb and Rockdale counties, which are home to Lithonia and Conyers, respectively.
