May 12. Georgia Hosta Society 23rd Annual Cut Leaf Show and Sale. In conjunction with the Tucker Days celebration, the show and sale will feature an outstanding display of hundreds of beautiful hostas. May 14. Voter Suppression in Georgia and the Case of the Quitman 10+2. Speakers include Helen Butler, executive director of the Coalition for the People’s Agenda, and members of the Quitman 10. May 16. East Metro Atlanta Christian Writers meeting. Beginning and advanced writers 16 years and older are invited to attend the East Metro Atlanta Christian Writers meeting 10 a.m. - noon, Georgia Piedmont Technical College’s Newton Campus, Building D and Conference Center, 8100 Bob Williams Parkway in Covington. May 18. Puberty Rocks for Girls. Is it time to address your daughter’s journey into adolescence? Learn how to help your daughter navigate the turbulent tween and teen years with the help of DeKalb Medical physician, Kay Entrekin, M.D. This fun girls’ night out will cover body changes, mood swings, peer pressure and more. May 18. Relay For Life of DeKalb County. Relay For Life is a life-changing event that helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease. May 19. Celebrate Chamblee. Family and community are the focus of the first Celebrate Chamblee, a community festival set to become an annual premier family event for the city. Celebrate Chamblee, which will showcase diversity through cultural activities and offerings. Chamblee City Hall at 5468 Peachtree Road, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public with food available from vendors.
May 19. Free community law clinic. The Gate City Bar Association will host a community law clinic, which will provide a forum for free, one-on-one consultations in the areas of bankruptcy, foreclosure, family and criminal law. May 20. Clarkston Farmers Market. Opening day for the Clarkston Farmers Market is from 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. The market will be located on the activities field beside the Clarkston Community Center, 3701 College Ave., Clarkston.
May 25. Monthly song circle.† Group singing just for fun–no performances. June 2. Stone Mountain Barbershop Chorus Spring Concert. Stone Mountain Barbershop Chorus will present its 2012 spring concert, “This is My Country,” for a single performance at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of Mountain Park United Methodist Church. The featured guest is A Mighty Wind, 2011 International Bronze Medalist Quartet. The church is located at 1405 Rockbridge Road, Stone Mountain. Volunteers Needed
Patient needs volunteer shopper. Compassionate Care Hospice has a patient who lives in the Decatur area on Clairmont Avenue. She needs groceries purchased once a week. The grocery store is right next door to her home. If you have one hour a week to assist this patient, call (770) 220-2723 or e-mail ltatum@cchnet.net.
Meals on Wheels needs Decatur volunteers. Senior Connections is in critical need of volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels routes in Decatur. The organization delivers thousands of meals to seniors at risk for hunger and needs Decatur drivers Monday through Friday. It takes about 90 minutes per route and volunteers can deliver once a week or once a month. Saturday drivers are needed as well. Corporations can “adopt” a route and rotate volunteer employees. May 24. Board meeting of the DeKalb Community Service Board. The public is invited to at meeting for those interested in services for mental health, addiction and developmental disabilities. The meeting will be held at 4 p.m., 445 Winn Way, Room 421, Decatur. Support group. A National Alliance on Mental Illness support group for people in recovery from mental illness, Connection meets at the Agnes Scott College Wellness Center on the first, third and fifth Mondays of each month. Bereavement support group. Those who have lost a loved one are invited to join this new support group facilitated by Hospice Atlanta’s Chaplain Daphne Clement, D.
