An off-duty DeKalb County Police officer is in critical condition at Atlanta Medical Center after being shot during a robbery attempt, according police spokesman Lt. Lloyd A. Ruffin.
Landers Burton, 32, a uniformed officer assigned to the Tucker precinct, was shot in the buttocks during an armed robbery attempt June 13 at the Landmark at Mountain View apartment complex at 155 Green Bark Circle West. The incident happened at approximately 11:43 p.m.
A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting, but police are refraining from releasing his name. The investigation is ongoing. The man faces charges of aggravated assault against a police officer and armed robbery.
According to police, two armed Black men attempted to rob Burton and shot him when he tried to defend himself. The suspects took Burton’s wallet and left in a dark-colored car, possibly a Toyota Camry, Ruffin said. Burton has been with the department for three years.
