Arraignment set for accused rapist

The arraignment for a man accused of raping a woman in a church is set for May 4 at 9:30 a.m., according to DeKalb district attorney spokesman Erik Burton.

John Russell Carter is scheduled to appear in Judge Michael Hancock’s courtroom. DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James, who will serve as lead prosecutor, recently announced a 12-count indictment of Carter for the rape of a woman on Feb. 26 at St. Timothy United Methodist Church in Stone Mountain. The counts of the indictment include rape, armed robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, burglary and possession of a knife during commission of a felony.

“This was an extremely violent and vicious act,” James said. “He brutally attacked and raped a woman in a local church. I am thankful for the swift actions of the DeKalb County Police Department for locating Carter and moving this case one step further to being resolved for both the victim of this crime and the community affected by this monstrous act.”
