Jury finds county guilty of race discrimination

A federal jury found DeKalb County, former CEO Vernon Jones and two other ex-officials guilty of discriminating against two White former Parks and Recreation Department managers based on race and awarded them $185,000 in damages on April 1.

The jury ordered damages to John Drake and the estate of Michael Bryant, who died in February, in the amount of $74,000 from the county, $55,500 from former Parks Department Director Marilyn Boyd Drew and $27,750 each from Jones and his former executive assistant, Richard Stogner.

The jury found no evidence of wrongdoing against former parks managers Becky Kelley and Herbert Lowe. The jury cleared defendant Morris Williams, who was an assistant county administrator and now serves as chief of staff for the Board of Commissioners, of any wrongdoing.

The county would be liable for most of the damages. When it comes to the payment of legal judgments, the DeKalb code states it shall pay up to $50,000 on behalf of an individual employee or a total of $200,000 on behalf of multiple employees being defended in the same case.

That doesn’t include legal fees. The bill for the county’s legal defense was at $2.54 million as of January, long before the trial started, and the plaintiffs’ attorneys said their fees were expected to be at least $2 million.

Jones posed for cameras but wouldn’t comment on the verdict, saying he planned a press conference on April 2. His lead attorney, Brent Wilson, said no decisions had been made about a possible appeal.

Attorneys for the plaintiffs, led by former Georgia Attorney General Mike Bowers, argued that the White managers were demoted, stripped of their job duties, humiliated and had their careers with the county ruined under a scheme to replace them with Blacks.

The defense denied the charges, characterizing the complaints as "petty workplace grievances" that had nothing to do with race, and arguing the White managers saw no loss in pay or benefits.

To "jessie".
Please allow the rumor of your ignorance to run and do not speek, type, or converse in any further way to prove its existance.
Yes, as a White American I will admit that wrongs have been done in the past as far as equality and Discrimination toward other races. So you justify the actions of any one who isnt White because of that. Your Moral and sincible compass is way off...
Here is one that Im certain that your mother told you. "2 wrongs dont make a Right". It is ignorant and closed minded people such as yourself that make broad, ignorant and Vinum filled statements that have perpetuated the mistreatment of your own race. If you want to try and portray your race as simple minded, then keep making those statements and shut up when your treated that way. Yes, the feact is that "ALL" Races need to learn understanding and come to the realization that no one is better or worse than any other. Also, that Race baating statements like your are only for those unlightened enough to blame their lack of success on their Color and not on their lack of effort!
BTW, Please learn to Spell words like "Ever" -"You" and "Now". and a little Sentence strutcure and punctuation.....Just Saying.

As someone who worked closely with Boyd-Drew for eight years, she was consistently unprofessional, and had little knowledge of not just parks & recreation, but how to manage people. There is no doubt that she conspired with Vernon Jones, a man devoid of morals and personal ethics. The county Parks & Recreation Dept. floundered under Marilyn Boyd-Drew, and we are very lucky to have a new director who acts professionally and with integrity.

The VICTORY is that the jury realized that this case was not worthy of a reward such as was requested, and sent these people back to the rocks they crawled out from. The TRADEGY is that the jury awarded anything. As a Dekalb County employee I feel that the WHOLE TRUTH did not come out. Mrs. Drew has high integrity and standards and that is always a problem when dealing with people of questionable integrity. If the truth is told you would find that the people awarded any amount of money managed with the power of this law-suit. They continually challenged Mrs. Drew's authority and encouraged their staff to do the same. There may have been bias in the Parks Department but it was not from Mrs. Drew.

It is high time that the tax payers of DeKalb County take a look at their government leaders and begin to hold them accountable by asking the hard questions and insisting on answers. While not always agreeing with CEO Jones at least you knew where he stood on most issurs; which is much more than what we get from CEO Ellis.

The best way to avoid race discrimination and hostile workplaces is by doing research about potential bosses on sites like eBossWatch.

Vernon Jones is a bigot and racist. I remember when he assaulted a white female Dekalb commissioner in a hallway at the court house. I also remember when he was charged with rape after having a 3 way with 2 black women. He is scum and this should effectively end any political career for him.

I have known Marilyn Drew for sometime. I am white. I have no affiliation with DeKalb Govt. Marilyn is one of the nicest people you could meet. She took her job seriously and had a high priority on delivering quality and responsive customer service despite a challenging infrastructure. She also tried to help develop students and give them opportunities. Maybe some people don't want to be held accountable and lash out through the court system.

Having studied this case for awhile now, it evident that a finding of the court shows, & is showing that some violations have and perhaps are still going on. That is the reason for my comment here, today, this so called Good Friday. Let me first express that I have known Ms.Marilyn Boyd Drew for over 40 years, and can express that she is a person of integrity!!. Having watched her career development, from it's Memphis roots, at Girls Club,INC., thru upward movement thru the ranks of the MPHS. Park Commision, and finally with the service to Parks, in DeKalb County, Georgia, all show that Ms. Drew is fair, unbiased, and respectful of human dignity & an advocate for the same upward mobility & fair treatment that she experienced in her career development. What we do in life does have a way of coming back around to us, sooner, or later. Hopefully, this ultimately will play out sonner for Ms. Drew, on this Good Friday. Good, not because it's the day that The CHRIST supposedly, died, but because He got up, 3 days later, in all of our behalf!! Hopefully, that will be the case for all involved in this necessary process, Good will prevail over not so Good, in everyone's behalf, especially, Ms. marilyn Boyd Drew. GOD Bless!! And, Happy Easter...

It's about time a little justice flowed in this case. I have known some of those found guilty of racial discrimination in this case for 25 to 30 years. I served for four years as a City Commissioner in Decatur, the County seat of Dekalb County, during the administration of Vernon Jones. I had never before been a personal witness to such racially bigoted behaviour as this and I am glad that justice has finally been attempted by the judicial system. Vernon Jones should be ashamed of his behaviour and anyone who votes for him to be a Congressman in the upcoming primaries should have a long talk with their minister or priest about their moral compass.
