Church rapist pleads guilty, sentenced to life in prison June 29

An 51-year-old Atlanta man will spend the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty to the rape in a church of a DeKalb County woman.

John Russell Carver was sentenced by Judge Asha Jackson to two consecutive life sentences plus 115 years in prison.

On June 29, Carver pleaded guilty to 10 counts including rape, armed robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, burglary and possession of a knife during commission of a felony.

Carver pleaded guilty to raping and assaulting a Stone Mountain church worker after she opened the building’s door for what she said she thought was a person in need of assistance.

DeKalb Fire Rescue distributes free box fans

The public education unit of DeKalb County Fire Rescue has received a donation of box fans and will distribute them free of charge to county residents to help them beat the summer heat.

Fans can be picked up at fire rescue headquarters, located at 1950 West Exchange Place, Tucker, or one of the following fire stations: 

• Station 15- 2107 Flightway Drive, Chamblee
• Station 17- 900 Evans Mill Road, Lithonia
• Station 20- 2919 Warren Road, Lithonia
• Station 22- 1859 Montreal Road, Tucker
• Station 23- 1265 Brockett Road, Clarkston

Proof of DeKalb County residency (driver’s license or utility bill) is required to receive a fan and priority will be given to senior citizens.

Welcome Home DeKalb debuts July 2

The debut of DeKalb County Television’s (DCTV Channel 23) newest program, Welcome Home DeKalb will be July 2 at 6 p.m.

The show, hosted by radio personality Sasha the Diva, features tours and overviews of homes currently offered through the Neighborhood Stabilization and Get Home Now! programs, homebuyer information, and stories highlighting the county’s newest homeowners and most sought-after properties.

On the first episode, viewers will meet a single mother who is a homeowner in DeKalb County because of her participation in a county homeownership program, tour a home currently available in Decatur, learn about homebuyer programs from DeKalb County Community Development Director Chris Morris and view a profile of a new retirement development currently being constructed in the county.

Welcome Home DeKalb joins DCTV’s regular lineup and will rebroadcast several times during the month. New episodes will air on the first Monday of each month.

Dunwoody to hold annual July 4 parade

The Dunwoody Homeowners Association and the Dunwoody Crier Newspaper will host the city’s annual Fourth of July Parade beginning at 9 a.m. July 4.

Former Dunwoody mayor Ken Wright will be the grand marshal of the parade feature marching bands, floats, clowns, animal units and local celebrities.

The 2.2-mile parade route begins at the intersection of Mount Vernon and Jett Ferry roads, proceeds west on Mount Vernon to Dunwoody Village Parkway. It turns right and follows the rights side of the median to Marlow’s Tavern, turning left into Dunwoody Village parking lot.

Mount Vernon Road between Jett Ferry and Dunwoody Village Parkway will close from 8:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

After the parade, a celebration will be held in Dunwoody Village.

Wade Walker Park Family YMCA opens for ‘first look’

The new Wade Walker Park Family YMCA, located at 5585 Rockbridge Road, will hold an open house July 7, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Residents will have a chance to tour the 60,000-square-foot facility, view departmental displays and enjoy games, entertainment and food.
