Domestic dispute leads to shooting by officer

A man was shot June 28 by a DeKalb County Police officer responding to a domestic dispute at an apartment complex.

Police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said officers responded to a call at approximately 10:30 p.m. at the Bryton Hill Apartments located off Skyland Drive near Clairmont Road.

“Once inside the apartment the subject appeared with a weapon initially pointed at his head and the officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect,” Parish said.

Parish said the suspect subsequently pointed the weapon at the officers and one of them discharged his weapon “striking the subject multiple times.”

Parish said the suspect is in critical condition and the officer has been placed on administrative leave as a matter of procedure.

DeKalb County safety tips for extreme heat

DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis and county safety officials recommend everyone take steps to protect against the dangers of excessive heat as a result of high temperatures expected this weekend in metro Atlanta, a press release stated.

Residents, especially the elderly and children 4 years old or younger, are encouraged to watch out for heat-related illnesses.

Transportation workforce opportunity forum set for June 30

DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis and other metro Atlanta officials will meet June 30 to discuss the workforce opportunities in the region if the transportation referendum is approved July 31.

The “What If” Summit: A Transportation Workforce Opportunity Forum is set for 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Courtyard Marriot, located at 130 Clairemont Ave. in Decatur.

According to a press release, if the referendum passes it is expected to create approximately 34,000 jobs.

Commissioner Johnson hosts Bouldercrest overlay and green space tour

As a result of redistricting, the boundary lines for DeKalb District 3 now include the Bouldercrest, Cedar Grove, Ellenwood and Conley areas of west DeKalb. 

Commissioner Larry Johnson will be conducting a tour of the area June 30 along with representatives of some of the associations in the area. The tour will begin at 9 a.m. at the Bouldercrest Plaza located at the corner of Bouldercrest and Clifton Church roads.

The tour will cover the industrial park areas, green space and the Conley industrial area.   

Space on the van is limited but residents who are interested in participating in the tour can follow the tour van as it travels through the area.

Salvation Army provides heat relief to local communities

The Salvation Army of Metro Atlanta will provide water and distribute 500 free electric fans to those in need throughout metro Atlanta, including Decatur, beginning at noon June 29.

A cooling station will also be set up for those who seek relief from high temperatures at The Salvation Army Peachcrest location in Decatur from noon-5 p.m. The facility is at 3500 Sherrydale Lane in Decatur.
