Dunwoody police seek assistance identifying larceny suspects

The Dunwoody Police Department is seeking assistance identifying two suspects involved in a theft June 2 at a Zales jewelry store at 4400 Ashford Dunwoody Parkway in Dunwoody. The suspects face larceny charges, according to police.

At approximately 11:23 a.m., two Black males walked into the jewelry store inside Perimeter Mall and asked to see three sets of diamond earrings valued at $8,579, according to Dunwoody Police. After one of the suspects took the earrings, both ran from the store out into the mall, police said.

Both suspects are described as thin Black males in their early 20s. One was wearing a red “polo-type” shirt with thin horizontal white stripes, black denim shorts, dark shoes and a black hat with a red bill. The other was wearing a red T-shirt with a large black and white logo on the chest, black warm-up pants with white stripes down the side and a red “Phillies” hat.

Dunwoody police seek entering auto suspects

The Dunwoody Police Department is seeking assistance identifying three suspects who broke into a vehicle at 1211 Ashford Center Parkway June 13.

Dunwoody Police said between 7-8:30 p.m., a Black male parked a pickup truck behind a dumpster next to a Taco Mac. Another Black male approached an SUV that was parked adjacent to the building and looked inside. After this person left the area, another came out from behind the dumpster, smashed the rear driver side window of the SUV and took a laptop computer.

One suspect is described as a thin Black male in his early to mid-20s, with short hair and a short beard, approximately 5-foot-8 to 6 feet tall. He wore a long white T-shirt, baggy “shin-length” jeans and white high-top sneakers.

Another suspect is described as a bald, heavy-set Black male, who was clean-clean shaven and was approximately 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10 inches tall. He wore a long white T-shirt, dark baggy “shin-length” jeans and dark high-tops. The other suspect, who police said is the driver of the truck, was also a Black male wearing a white T-shirt. The suspects’ vehicle is described as a four-door, green Chevy truck, possibly a Colorado.

DeKalb commissioner holds “Deacons in Devotion” event

DeKalb County Commissioner Stan Watson will host the second annual Deacons in Devotion event June 24 at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts and Community Center at 3181 Rainbow Drive in Decatur, at 5 p.m.

Co-hosting the event is former host of BET’s Lift Every Voice show Gerard Henry.  

The purpose of the event is to highlight the tradition and impact of the Deacon’s Ministries in African American churches. Participating churches are Antioch-Lithonia Missionary Baptist Church; Clarkston First Baptist Church; Covenant Ministries Cathedral; Fairfield Baptist Church; Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church; Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church; Greenforest Community Baptist Church; Israel Missionary Baptist Church; New Piney Gove Missionary Baptist Church; Poplar Springs Baptist Church; and Salem Bible Church.

Watson will also honor legendary “African American Men in Gospel Music.” These honorees include K.D. Bowe, Donald Cochran, Rodney Evans, Reggie Gay, Bob Grissom, Bobby Hurd, Rodell Lewis, Eli Smith, Ace Alexander and Larry Tinsley. Singer Reuben Baker will perform as well.

Former public works supervisor sentenced on extortion charges

A DeKalb County Department of Public Works engineering supervisor who extorted money from a private construction contractor was sentenced June 20 to serve three years in federal prison on charges of extortion.

U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said Fidelis Ogbu, 60, abused his position as a public works employee by “shaking down” a local contractor.

Yates said Ogbu extorted money from a private construction contractor, who was working as an informant with law enforcement, by compelling the contractor to pay him off in order for the contractor to complete the project and gain further work.

Ogbu was arrested Nov. 4, 2011, while attempting to extort money from the contractor. Ogbu’s prison sentence is to be followed by three years of supervised released and 100 hours of community service.

Go Skateboarding day in Dunwoody

Dunwoody is celebrating Go Skateboarding day June 21, noon-5 p.m., at Brook Run Skate Park at 4770 North Peachtree Road in Dunwoody.

The event, hosted by Atlanta skater Load, will include skating demonstrations, prizes and giveaways throughout the day.

The event is being held in honor of National Go Skateboarding Day and is part of the Museum of Design Atlanta’s exhibit Skate it or Hang It?! The Evolution of Skateboard Art.
