Woman dies in Decatur house fire

Responding to a fire in the early hours of June 8, DeKalb County Fire Rescue found an elderly woman unconscious and unresponsive inside the house on Terratim Place in Decatur. The woman was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Fire department spokesman Norman Augustin said when firefighters arrived at approximately 5:28 a.m. there was heavy smoke inside the house and the fire was contained in one room.

A man who identified the older woman as his mother was outside the house. He was taken to Grady, where he was treated for burns. Fire officials have not yet released the identities of the victims.

Pastor issues statement following shooting at funeral

Dr. Kenneth L. Samuel, senior pastor and organizer of Victory for the World Church in Stone Mountain, issued a statement following a June 7 shooting in the church’s parking lot after the funeral for 19-year-old Ryan Guider, a gunshot victim. He said, “This tragedy is another reason why people of all faiths must come together in coalition with public safety officials and elected officials to stem the rising tide of youth violence in the African-American community.” Samuel said before the gunfire erupted, he had just delivered a eulogy about the value of life, setting the right priorities in life and promoting peace in the community.

County offer discounted adoption fees June 11-15

DeKalb County joins a nationwide effort on Monday, June 11, to increase the number of pet adoptions and reduce the number of animals in shelters. During the “Just One Day” adoption event, set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., DeKalb County Animal Services will focus efforts on adoptions for the day and discount the adoption fee to $60 through Friday, June 15. Puppies, kittens, cats, and dogs will be available for adoption at 845 Camp Road, Decatur.
