Inaugural DeKalb Day of Play upcoming
The DeKalb County Day of Play is set for May 19 at Exchange Park in Decatur. The free event, hosted by Atlanta Fit Fest producer Stepp Stewart, focuses on indoor and outdoor activities for children. There will be bicycle and skateboard giveaways, inflatables, line dancing and free cardio dance classes. Other activities include Zumba, football drills with former NFL player David McMillan of the Cleveland Browns, martial arts and “stand up and cheer” workouts, and a Cha-Chersize exercise class led by former Atlanta Falcons player Jamie Dukes. There also will be food, face painting, games and more. Stewart is an on-air personality and fitness guru for The Dr. Oz Show.
The event will take place 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Exchange Park is at 2771 Columbia Drive in Decatur.
32 graduate from youth leadership program
Thirty-two students from the Youth Leadership DeKalb (YLD) Class of 2012 graduated from the 10-month leadership training program and participated in a graduation ceremony held at Georgia Perimeter College on May 7.
The students, representing 15 public and private high schools in DeKalb County and the metro-Atlanta area, received leadership training focused on understanding criminal justice, health, quality of life issues, business and entrepreneurship, government, finance and civic engagement.
The graduates of the program are Tasneem Akbar, Gerald Brown Jr., David Egas, Vivian Lee, Jada Mack and Jackson McCleary, Druid Hills High School; Viviana Coronado, Lakeside High School; Christopher Bowman, Megan McKinstry and Leigh Peters, Marist; Naim Fareed, W.D. Mohammed High School; Stefan Gresham, Woodward Academy; Courtney Neapollioun and Richard Peay, DeKalb School of the Arts; Ashton Jordan, Kenzie Thompson and Joya Reasor, Chamblee High School; Taahira Sheffield, Clarkston High School; Olivia Perdue, Columbia High School; Kristen Peagler, Southwest DeKalb High School; Luwana Alfred and D’Yaneisia DeShay, Towers High School; Madison Dill and Whitney Dixon, Dunwoody High School; Damon Arline and Joshua Heard, Cedar Grove High School; Alavia Cromartie, Ayana Sears, Brittany Sears, Arabia Mountain High School; Jordan Bennett, Mekhi Seraile and Craig Smith, Redan High School.
