Student indicted for attempted murder of Atlanta Police officer

A DeKalb County grand jury returned a 16-count indictment today on a 19-year-old Oglethorpe University student accused of shooting an Atlanta Police Department officer. Cameron Maddox faces multiple felony counts including attempted murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

“This was a senseless shooting upon an officer of the law and innocent bystanders,” said DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James. “This was simply a violent and deplorable act and my office will work to seek justice for all those involved.”

Maddox was arrested for allegedly firing a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun on APD officer Dexter Toomer from the roof of a restaurant on Moreland Avenue. Toomer was shot in the leg.
