DCSD appoints new chief financial officer

The DeKalb County Board of Education voted unanimously March 29, to approve the appointment of Michael Perrone as chief financial officer (CFO) for the DeKalb County School District.

Perrone was recently CFO for Duval County Public Schools in Jacksonville, Fla. He was previously executive director of budget services for the Duval school system as well as director of finance for Barnstable Public Schools in Barnstable, Mass.

Perrone holds a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Hartford in Connecticut and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Boston College.

United Methodist Children’s Home holding flea market, bake sale

Clothes, books, kitchen items, baked goods and more will be on sale during the United Methodist Children’s Home flea market and bake sale on March 30-31, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the children’s home at 500 S. Columbia Drive in Decatur.

Breakfast and lunch items will also be for sale. All proceeds from the flea market and bake sale go to support the children and families served at the children’s home.

Board of Health to combat childhood obesity with dance event

The DeKalb County Board of Health is holding a physical activity and dance event to combat obesity in children and teens, Saturday, March 31, at 10 a.m. at James R. Hallford Stadium, 3789 Memorial College Ave., Clarkston.

DeKalb Police seeking citizen academy applicants

The DeKalb County Police Department is seeking applicants to fill its May 2012 Citizen Academy, a free 10-week course that allows residents to gain an inside perspective about law enforcement.  During the sessions, personnel from various units, including patrol officers, detectives and crime prevention will teach participants about the complexities and operational structure of their perspective units.

The citizen academy is designed to assist in building stronger relationships between the community and the DeKalb County Police Department. 

Participants must be at least 21 years old, live or work in DeKalb County, have no felony convictions and must consent to a background check.

The deadline to submit applications is April 27. Applications are available at each police precinct or may be requested by e-mailing Officer Jefferson at gkJeffer@dekalbcountyga.gov.   

Applications must be returned to the DeKalb County Police Training Unit (Attention: Officer Jefferson), 2484 Bruce St., Lithonia, GA 30058.
