No arrests yet in early morning nightclub shooting

DeKalb County Police spokeswoman Mekka Parrish said police have not identified suspects or made arrests relating to a 2:50 a.m. shooting Feb. 20 outside Pin-Ups nightclub at 2788 East Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur. The injured man was taken to an area hospital and is listed in serious condition. Police said a group of men, including the victim, had been ordered to leave the club and apparently got into an altercation with another group of men in the parking lot. Shots were fired and several men were seen fleeing the scene.

Rally in support of foreclosure bill announced

The House Democratic Caucus has announced a “Faces of Foreclosure” rally Thursday, Feb. 23, 12:30 - 2 p.m. on the Georgia Capitol west wing steps (facing Washington Street). Sponsored by Rep. Dar’shun Kendrick of the 94th District, the event is in support of HB 781 (Homeowners Fairness Act). Other scheduled speakers include DeKalb County Commissioner Lee May; Georgia Public Safety Commissioner Sam Verniero; David A. Washington of The Foreclosure Legal Clinic; Janice Mathis of Rainbow Push Coalition; Georgia Rep. Workshop to provide free tax preparation and tips

U. S. Rep. John Lewis will host a jobs workshop Thursday, Feb.  23, 4 – 7 p.m. at the Lang Carson Community Center offering tax tips for individuals and the self-employed as well as free tax preparation assistance.  The tax preparers will discuss the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which offers a significant cash benefit to low-income earners who fit within certain IRS parameters. 

No appointment is necessary for general information, but space is limited and interested people are encouraged to come early. For tax preparation, an appointment is needed. Quilt expo to open

The Ebony Stitchers Quilt Guild has announced the a Community Quilting Expo Saturday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts Center, 3181 Rainbow Drive, Decatur. The expo will feature information on the art of quilt making, from dyeing fabrics in Africa to piecing bedding from old clothes. Guild members will demonstrate delicate handwork and intricate machine work involved in making quilts. Visitors will have opportunities to try quilting. The event will include story-telling, live music, light refreshments and book sales.
