Man shoots Pizza Hut employee, kills himselfAccording to a police report, a 23-year-old man entered the Pizza Hut at 4906 Covington Highway in Decatur on Feb. 18, and got into a dispute with a male employee at 11:30 a.m.

The suspect apparently shot the 32-year-old male employee and went into the rear of the restaurant and shot himself.

The employee was transported to a local hospital in critical State lawmakers hold hearing on banning cell phone towers at schools

State Rep. Karla Drenner (D-86) will hold a hearing on a proposal to ban cell phone towers on school properties.

The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 11:30 a.m. in room 415 of the Coverdell Legislative Office Building, across the street from the state capitol.

DeKalb commissioner to hold budget public hearing in District 3

DeKalb Commissioner Larry Johnson will hold a public information meeting on the county’s 2012 budget on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p. m. at the Exchange Park Intergenerational Center, 2771 Columbia Drive, Decatur.

Participants will hear a presentation of the budget and will have an opportunity to ask questions.

DeKalb CEO to hold town hall meeting Feb. 21

DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis will hold a town hall meeting Tuesday, Feb. 21, to give residents an opportunity to discuss and learn about county-related issues. The meeting will be 7-8:30 p.m. at Stephenson High School, 701 Stephenson Road, Stone Mountain.

Fire department to hold ribbon-cutting ceremony for newly remodeled station

The DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. for the newly remodeled Fire Station No. 10 located at 1686 Constitution Road in Atlanta. Improvements to the original station, built in 1960, were made using Community Development Block Grant funds.

DeKalb commissioner holds anti-crime forum

DeKalb Commissioner Larry Johnson will be hosting a No Crime Zone Forum on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. at the Flat Shoals Library at 4022 Flat Shoals Parkway, Decatur.

The forum will be an opportunity for business owners in the Candler Road/Flat Shoals Parkway business corridor to address issues and develop strategies concerning criminal activity in the area. 

The DeKalb Police Department will present its crime prevention strategies and Sonja Brown, the community prosecutor from the solicitor general’s office, will detail how the solicitor general’s office can assist business owners once a criminal case has entered the judicial system.

County parks department collecting shoes for charity

The DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs is collecting shoes for the Soles4Souls charity through Feb. 29.

Soles4Souls collects shoes from footwear companies and individuals to be distributed to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has delivered more than 16 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes across the world.

All types and sizes of shoes in good condition will be accepted. Those donating shoes are asked to tie each       pair together.

Shoe donations will be accepted at any of the locations listed below:
