Heading into the final week of the regular season, the final playoff spots were up for grabs in regions 6-AAAA, 5-AAA and 6-AA.

Chamblee earned the No. 4 seed in 6-AAAA with a dramatic 16-8 win over Miller Grove and Towers beat Carver Atlanta to secure the fourth spot in 5-AAA. Chamblee will play at Hiram and Towers will play at Eastside in the first round of the state playoffs.

Avondale needed a win to secure the final spot in 6-AA and got it 77-7 over Cross Keys.

In the 6-AAAA showdown, Chamblee led 16-0 at halftime and held off a fourth-quarter surge by the Wolverines. Facing third down at the Chamblee 10 with 10 seconds remaining, Blake Summers caught a low pass from Roma Fulton at the 3 and fell down. Time expired as the Wolverines were out of time outs.

“We knew three weeks ago we’d have to win our last three games,” Bulldogs coach Michael Collins said. “We lost so many close games last year. To be able to pull out a close one like this should help us with momentum and give us confidence going into the playoffs.”

Chamblee scored on a 35-yard fumble return by Kristopher Parks and a 20-yard run by Ronald Herndon. Fulton scored Miller Grove’s touchdown on a 2-yard run. He also completed a two-point conversion pass.

Towers needed similar dramatics in a 29-14 win. Devin Johnson scored on a 2-yard run and a 90-yard kickoff return as the Titans led 13-6 at halftime. Johnson had 250 all-purpose yards.

After Carver took the lead 14-13 early in the third, the Titans closed out the game with 16 straight points. Miles Gooch passed for 200 yards and a touchdown. Jimmille Jackson, Antwan Jackson, Jhacobe Campbell and Denzell Byars all played well defensively, said coach Jonathan Sanks.
