Big Top Fun: 3 circuses give residents plenty of choices

The Big Apple Circus

Bello, UniverSoul and Zing Zang Zoom.

February is circus month in the Atlanta area, and big top aficionados will come to know those three terms well over the next few weeks. Fans of high-wire acrobatics, clown antics and an endless array of animal acts will have plenty to choose from.

Closest to home, the Big Apple Circus presents “Bello is Back!” for its annual engagement at Stone Mountain Park, Feb. 12-28. The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey “Zing Zang Zoom” tour comes to Philips Arena in Atlanta Feb. 12-21, and the UniverSoul Circus is scheduled for Feb. 17- March 7 in the Green Parking Lot at Turner Field in Atlanta.

Bello Nock, Big Apple’s daredevil clown, will join performers from around the world, including Italian acrobats, Russian wizards of the trampoline and flying trapeze, and Chinese contortionists. The animal acts include an acrobatic canine show and stampeding steeds.

One of the attractions of the Big Apple Circus is that no spectator is more than 50 feet away from the ring. Nearly 2,000 spectators can see all the action up close under the heated Big Top. Music from the Big Apple Circus Band provides a backdrop to all the excitement in the ring.

The Atlanta-based UniverSoul Circus visits its hometown with a multi-cultural line-up that will be performing to hip-hop, R&B, gospel and funk music.

Billed as the most interactive show in the world, the acts include a three-man comedy trapeze troupe, young contortionists from Africa, 14 Chinese acrobats performing daredevil stunts between two vertical poles, and performers executing acrobatic feats on horseback – all in one ring.

The Ringling Bros.’ Zing Zang Zoom show includes plenty of magic and illusion – watch as a four-ton elephant disappears. Circus-goers also can see human cannonballs be blasted through the air, as well as plenty of gravity-defying acrobatics and animal acts.
