Cedar Grove’s Jarboe catches on at Troy

Josh Jarboe, right, dismissed by the Oklahoma Sooners football team two weeks ago is now a member of the Troy [Ala.] Trojans.

Troy, Ala. — Josh Jarboe, a highly regarded wide receiver recruit from Cedar Grove who was kicked off the team at Oklahoma two weeks ago, has decided to enroll at Troy.

“Troy University has always been interested in providing opportunities for young people to better themselves, and this is a situation where a young man who has made some mistakes is looking for a second chance,” Troy coach Larry Blakeney said in a statement Wednesday.

“I have met with Josh, and I am convinced that he is ready, and willing, to do the things we need for him to do to be a productive member of both this football team and the Troy University community.”

Troy spokesman Ricky Hazel said the school is still trying to determine whether Jarboe will be allowed to play this season or need to sit out one season under NCAA rules.

Oklahoma Sooners head football coach Bob Stoops dismissed Jarboe two weeks ago for cutting a profanity-laced rap video that was broadcast on YouTube. It came on the heels of a a felony gun possession charge in March after a school official saw him brandish an automatic handgun in a Cedar Grove parking lot.

Jarboe, handed a second chance when he arrived in Oklahoma, now has a third chance to get it right.

Stone Mountain High School standout Charles Reeves Jr. was recruited by Troy and is expected to see early playing time as a freshman. Now the Trojans may have a DeKalb County one-two punch in Reeves Jr. and Jarboe.

“I think it’s gonna be great,” said Stone Mountain head football coach and Reeves Jr.’s father, Charles Reeves Sr.

“Those kids have been playing together since they were kids,” he said. “They’ve always wanted to play on the same team and now they will.”
