Sharon Barnes-Sutton takes DeKalb 4th district commission seat by landslide

From staff reports

Educator Sharon Barnes-Sutton, who received 73 percent of the votes, easily won the District 4 DeKalb County Commission seat vacated by Burrell Ellis in his bid for county CEO.

She narrowly missed winning outright in the July 15 primary race.  But with 49.65 percent of the vote she was thrown into Tuesday’s runoff with second-place contender “Unhappy Taxpayer” Viola Davis.

Barnes-Sutton, 48, who teaches business to high school students in DeKalb County, during her campaign said if elected she would focus on public safety and security, protecting the environment, reducing traffic congestion, sparking economic development and improving the relationship between commissioners and the school board.

Davis, 45, is a familiar face to those who regularly attend DeKalb County commission meetings and other community events. Regularly wearing bright yellow “Unhappy Taxpayer & Voter” T-shirts, she and her mother, Ruby Davis, are present for nearly every commission meeting.

Because there were no Republicans contending for the position, Barnes-Sutton takes office with no further opposition.
