The new Browns Mill pool in Lithonia opened Aug. 1. |
Lithonia resident Linda Freeman-Allen has been waiting forever to be able to take her kids to a neighborhood pool.
With the opening of Browns Mill Family Aquatic Facility on Aug. 1, Freeman-Allen now has just what’s she’s been looking for all these years.
“We were standing in line before they opened, just excited about being here,” said Freeman-Allen, who has seen the county grow tremendously for the past 16 year.
“From the senior citizens facility to now this water park, we don’t have to travel to Gwinnett County anymore. Now we can bring our children to a place in our own back yard,” she said.
Children with towels, swimsuits and parents at arm’s reach came to help kick off the grand opening of the new pool.
Funded through 2005 park bonds, the 34,776 square-foot, $7 million aquatic facility consists of three areas -- the Tot Pool, the Lazy River and the Leisure Pool.
Director of Parks & Recreation Marilyn Boyd Drew said not everyone has to know how to swim to enjoy the facility. The aquatic center has a few ankle-deep kiddie pools for those who only want to get their feet wet.
Pools feature water slides, water canons, nets and interactive games.
“This center is larger than the Gwinnett center and it has more attractions,” said Carlethia Armstrong of Lithonia. “These attractions suit the needs of children from all ages and even we as parents can enjoy ourselves while being closer to home,” she said..
The Browns Mill aquatic center is open to all county residents. It is located at 4929 Browns Mill Road Lithonia, Ga., 30038.
The facility has restrooms with showers, first-aid station, an information plaza and three areas with water features for the entire family. The center plans to hold swim classes as well as adding programs and classes. Parents can register their children on-site.
