Two years ago, Miller Grove’s head coach Vincent Byams said his Wolverine baseball team was going to surprise people. They’re no longer a surprise. Byams opened the season with seven straight wins, including a 23-8 victory over Decatur.
At Wilson Fieldon March 19, the Wolverines’ first loss of the season came against a Lakeside squad that has struggled with a 2-5 start. Junior pitcher Andy Threatt pitched a complete game, registering five strikeouts while giving up only two hits and one run—a solo homer by Rondall Oliver in the top of the sixth to mount Miller Grove’s only threat to a 3-0 Viking lead.
Lakeside’s southpaw threw two runners out at first with some handy lead-off moves. “My freshman year, my pitching coach and I worked on that every day for an hour,” said Threatt of his handy work after the game.
Veteran head coach Bill Newsome was pleased with his team’s performance against an undefeated Miller Grove. “We had a good outing on the mound and a good defensive effort said Newsome. “It’s a good win for us. Miller Grove’s been playing well, and we did a good job.”
